editInherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀲𑁄𑀳𑀕𑁆𑀕 (sohagga), from Sanskrit सौभाग्य (saubhāgya).[1] First attested in c. 1611 as Middle Hindi سُہاگ (shag) / سُوہاگ (svhag).[2]
