Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *k(i)adɨš (leather belt), a development of *k(i)adɨ- (to sew together).[1] Cognate with Azerbaijani qayış, Bashkir ҡайыш (qayış), Kazakh қайыс (qaiys), Kyrgyz кайыш (kayış), Southern Altai кайыш (kayïš), Uzbek qayish and Yakut хатыс (qatıs).
