Ottoman Turkish

Etymology

edit

Uncertain; perhaps from Proto-Turkic *kon-, *ko- (to put), whence قونمق (konmak, to settle, perch) and قومق (komak, to put). Alternatively, Nişanian proposes a derivation from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (kwd /kōy/, lane, street). also compare Zanjan dialect Azerbaijani کوی (village) and Persian کوی (lane).
