Etymology

Izafa compound of وبال (vabāl, “burden, weight”) +‎ دوش (doś). The second term in the compound conflates borrowings from both Classical Persian دوش (dōš, “shoulder”) and Sanskrit दोष (doṣa, “guilt, fault, blame”).
