editFrom Classical Syriac ܓܹܝܗܲܢܵܐ (gēhannā), from Ancient Greek γέεννα (géenna) with the addition of the "h" from Biblical Hebrew גֵּיהִנֹּם (gêhinnōm); compare Arabic جَهَنَّم (jahannam).
