    Inherited from Prakrit 𑀉𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀭𑀇 (uttaraï), from Sanskrit उत्त॑रति (úttarati), from उद्- (ud-) + तर॑ति (tárati). Cognate to Sinhalese උතුරනවා (uturanawā).
