Etymology
editFrom Proto-Indo-Aryan *ȷ́ígaHti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ǰígaHti, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷí-gʷeh₂-ti ~ *gʷí-gʷh₂-ti, reduplicated present of *gʷeh₂- (“to step”). Cognate with Old Armenian կամ (kam, “to stand, be, appear, exist”).
