Etymology
editFrom Proto-Indo-Aryan *ȷ́wálati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́wálati, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵwélH-e-ti, from *ǵwelH- (“to burn, to glow”). Cognate with Lithuanian žvìlti, Old English col (whence English coal).
