तर्कु

SanskritEdit

EtymologyEdit

From Proto-Indo-European *terkʷ- ‎(to turn), whence also Sanskrit तर्क ‎(tarka, twisted grass?), निष्टर्क्य ‎(niṣ-ṭarkyá, what can be unscrewed) and probably verbal root तर्कयति ‎(tarkayati, to conjecture, guess, speculate about). Cognates include Latin torqueō, Hittite 𒋻𒆪𒉿𒀭𒍣 ‎(tarkuwanzi), and Old Church Slavonic тракъ ‎(trakŭ). Per Lubotsky, Ancient Greek ἄτρακτος ‎(átraktos) cannot related because of -κ- ‎(-k-) and the initial ‎(a).
