Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘢𑘚𑘜𑘹 (paḍaṇe), Maharastri Prakrit 𑀧𑀟𑀇 (paḍaï), from Sanskrit पतति (pátati, to fly, fall). Compare Hindi पड़ना (paṛnā), Gujarati પડવું (paḍvũ), Nepali पर्नु (parnu), Bengali পড়া (poṛa), Konkani पडचे (paḍce).
