From Proto-Indo-Aryan *bʰáHas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰáHas, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰéh₂os, from *bʰeh₂- (shine). Cognate with Ancient Greek φάος (pháos, radiance, light) (whence English photo-, phosphorus), and possibly Latin (iu)bar, Old English basu (purple).
