Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *mántram, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mántram, from Proto-Indo-European *mén-trom, from *men- (“to think”) +‎ *-trom, hence "instrument of thought". Related to मनस् (mánas, “mind”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬄𐬚𐬭𐬀 (mąθra).
