Inherited from Early Assamese আখি (akhi), from Magadhi Prakrit *𑀅𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀺 (*akkhi), from Sanskrit অক্ষি (akṣi), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hákṣi, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hákši, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ókʷs (eye), from *h₃ekʷ-. Cognate with Bengali আঁখ (ãkh), Odia ଆଖି (akhi), Hindi आँख (ā̃kh), Gujarati આંખ (ā̃kha), Punjabi ਅੱਖ (akkha), Nepali आँखा (ā̃khā), Romani jakh, Kashmiri أچھ (ạch), Kalasha , English eye.
