Etymology

Inherited from Early Assamese ঘাঁস (gha̐so), from Sanskrit ঘাস (ghāsa), from the root verb ঘস্ (ghas, to eat, devour). Cognate with Bengali ঘাস (ghaś), Sylheti ꠊꠣ (), ꠊꠣꠡ (gáś), Hindi घास (ghās).
