Inherited from Prakrit 𑀙𑀼𑀯𑀇 (chuvaï), from Sanskrit छुपति (chupati), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *šćupati, from Proto-Indo-European *sḱupeti, whence also Russian щу́пать (ščúpatʹ). Cognate with Assamese ছোৱা (süa), Odia ଛୁଇଁବା (chuĩbā), Maithili छुअब (chub), Nepali छुनु (chunu), Hindi छूना (chūnā), Gujarati છોવું (chovũ), Punjabi ਛੂਹਣਾ (chūhṇā), Sindhi ڇُهَڻُ (chuhaṇu).
