Etymology

Inherited from Middle Bengali বেঅকুভ (beokubh) with deaspiration and syncope, from Classical Persian بیوقوف (bēwuqūf) with voicing, from بی (bē-, without) and Arabic وُقُوف (wuqūf, standing still; study, knowledge). Cognate with Gujarati બેવકૂફ (bevakūph), Hindustani بیوقوف (byoqof) / बेवक़ूफ़ (bevaqūf).
