Inherited from Old Bengali মুঞি (muñi), from Sanskrit मया (mayā), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *máyaH, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *máyaH, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁móy. Cognate to Assamese মই (moi) and Hindustani मैं (ma͠i) / میں (ma͠i).
