Inherited from Sanskrit স্ৱপতি (svapati), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *swápati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *swápati, from Proto-Indo-European *swép-e-ti, from *swep- (to sleep). Compare Bengali শোয়া (śōẇa), Hindustani सोना (sonā) / سونا (sonā).
