Etymology 1Edit

Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀳𑁄𑀢𑀺 (hoti), from Sanskrit भवति (bhavati).

VerbEdit

হওয়া (hoōẏa)

  1. to be, to become; to come into existence
  2. an auxiliary verb
    1. (with the main verb in the verbal noun form) marks the passive voice
      দীপাবলি সামনের সাপ্তাহ পালন করা হবে
dipaboli śamner śaptah palôn kôra hôbe.
Deepavali will be celebrated next week.

Usage notesEdit

The simple present tense of "to be" is not typically used in Bengali. For example, there is no verb required in the sentence আমি মার্কিন (ami markin), which translates as "I am (an) American", while it literally means "I American".
