From Sanskrit मधु (mádhu, mead; honey; juice, nectar) +‎ -వు (-vu); from Proto-Indo-European *médʰu (mead). Cognates include Ancient Greek μέθυ (méthu), Lithuanian medùs, Old Church Slavonic медъ (medŭ, honey), and Old English medu (English mead).
