Possibly from Sanskrit त्रुट् (truṭ, “to break, to tear, to be split, to be torn”) (which is the root of त्रुटि (truṭi), त्रुटति (truṭati), त्रुटित (truṭita), त्रुट्यति (truṭyati)), refers to breaking off the last year and entering the new year.
