From Proto-Tai *C̥.baːᴮ (shoulder). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨷ᩵ᩤ, Lao ບ່າ (), ᦢᦱᧈ (ḃaa¹), Shan မႃႇ (màa) or ဝႃႇ (wàa), Tai Nüa ᥛᥣᥱ (mǎa), Tai Dam ꪚ꪿ꪱ, Ahom 𑜈𑜡 (), Zhuang mbaq, Tày . Compare Proto-Austronesian *qabaʀa (shoulder).
