From Proto-Southwestern Tai *pʰɤŋꟲ (bee; beeswax), from Middle Chinese (MC phjowng, “bee; wasp”). Cognate with Lao ເຜິ້ງ (phœng) or ເຜີ້ງ (phœ̄ng), ᦕᦹᧂᧉ (ṗhueng²), Shan ၽိုင်ႈ (phūeng), Tai Nüa ᥚᥪᥒᥲ (phùeng), Tai Dam ꪹꪠꪷ꫁ꪉ, Ahom 𑜇𑜢𑜤𑜂𑜫 (phüṅ).
