From Sanskrit विज्ञान (vijñāna, consciousness) and Pali viññāṇa (consciousness). Cognate with Khmer វិញ្ញាណ (vɨññiən), Khün ᩅᩥᨬ᩠ᨬᩣᨱ, Lao ວິນຍານ (win nyān), Burmese ဝိညာဉ် (wi.nyany).
