From หญิง (yǐng, “woman”) +‎ งาม (ngaam, “beautiful”) +‎ เมือง (mʉʉang, “city”), literally "beautiful woman of the city; calque from Pali nagara sobhiṇī (“city's courtesan”, literally “city's beautiful woman”), from which Thai นครโสภิณี was derived.
