From Proto-Tai *ʰmoːŋᴬ (“gray”). Cognate with Lao ໝອງ (mǭng), Shan မွင် (mǎung), Ahom 𑜉𑜨𑜂𑜫 (moṅ), Zhuang mong. Compare Khmer ហ្មង (mɑɑng).
