From Proto-Tai *ˀjɯǝkᴰ (hungry). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩀᩣ᩠ᨠ, Lao ຢາກ (yāk), ᦊᦱᧅ (ẏaak), Shan ယၢၵ်ႇ (yàak), Zhuang iek. Compare Sui qyaags (hungry) and Middle Chinese (MC yowk, “to want”).
