ThaiEdit

EtymologyEdit

From Sanskrit आश्चर्य (āścarya, astonishment; miracle; surprise); probably via Angkorian Old Khmer ʼaścāryya (marvel, wonder; marvellous, wondrous). Cognate with Old Khmer iscāryya, isacāryya, isacaryya; Modern Khmer អស្ចារ្យ (ʾɑɑhcaayɔɔ); Lao ອັດສະຈັນ (’at sa chan). Compare Pali acchariya, from which Thai อัจฉริยะ was derived.
