editFrom Sanskrit शोक (śoka, “sorrow; grief; distress; affliction; etc”), possibly via Angkorian Old Khmer សោក (sok, “sorrow; affliction”) or Middle Khmer សោក (soka, “grief, affliction; sorrow, mourning; lamentation, regret”); compare Modern Khmer សោក (saok), Pali soka (“grief; sorrow; mourning”). Cognate with Lao ໂສກ (sōk), ໂສກາ (sō kā).
