Despite MED, which groups this sense with the "school" sense, STEDT derives the word from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-klawŋ (to guard, tend cattle, graze, be at leisure), whence also Tibetan བསྐྱངས (bskyangs, to guard, keep, tend (cattle)), སྐྱོང (skyong, idem), Old Chinese (OC *laŋʔ, *laŋs, “to nourish, raise, develop”) (STEDT).
