Inherited from Old Burmese ဖုရာ (phurā), borrowed from Sanskrit वर पूजार्ह (vara pūjārha, venerable enclosure), though Sanskrit वर (vara) or Pali vara may be more likely. Likely cognate with Shan ၽြႃး (phráa) and Mon ပြဲ.
