First element from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *ljap (butterfly), whence also Tibetan ཕྱེ་མ་ལེབ (phye ma leb) and Chinese (OC *l'eːb).

Second element cognate with Tibetan བླ (bla) and Chinese (OC *pʰraːɡ).

For the association of "butterfly" with "spirit", compare Thai ผีเสื้อ (pǐi-sʉ̂ʉa, butterfly, literally tutelary soul).
