Reborrowed from Thai เวียง (wiiang), from Old Khmer vāṅ, vāṅṅ, vaṅ (enclosure, citadel, stronghold, palace), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *wa(a)ŋ (enclosure). Doublet of វាំង (vĕəng, to enclose, citadel, place).
