Compound of (maki, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, stem form) of verb 撒く (maku, to scatter, to cast, to sow)) +‎ (hishi, a water chestnut; the rhomboid shape of a water chestnut; a caltrop). The hishi changes to bishi as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
