Renamed from 赤寮 (ciah4 liao5) during the Qing era after irrigation was introduced.[1]

Teochew linguist Lin Lunlun 林倫倫 writes instead that the original name was 粟寮 (ciah4 liao5, literally grain hut), also written as 赤寮 (ciah4 liao5), and that 穀饒谷饶 (gog4 riao5, literally grain + plentiful) is a roughly synonymous + homophonous modification of the original name.[2]
