Etymology

From 総(そう) (sō-, “all”) + 立(た)ち (tachi, “standing”, 連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 立(た)つ (tatsu, “to stand”).). The tachi changes to dachi as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
