Etymology

Coined in 1747 with the establishment of 緬寧, which was converted from 孟緬長官司, established in 1430. The (miǎn) in 緬寧 was likely taken from 孟緬孟缅 (alternatively written as 猛緬猛缅), which is a transcription of the name of the place in a Tai language (compare Tai Nüa ᥛᥫᥒᥰ ᥛᥦᥢᥰ (möeng mäen)).
