Etymology edit

Compound of 鳴門 (naruto, a noisy strait or narrows where the rushing of the tides causes noisy whirlpools) +‎ 巻き (maki, winding; spiral), for the way the spiral pattern in the kamaboko resembles a whirlpool.[1][2]
