First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean ᄲᅮᆫ (Yale: spwun), from (Yale: -s, genitive marker) + Sino-Korean 분〯(分) (Yale: pwǔn, “part, portion”).
