Etymology edit

From Old Persian *vahanam (house), from Proto-Iranian *wāhana (habitation), from Proto-Iranian *Hwah-, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hwas-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wes-. Equivalent to *h₂wes- + *-enom. Compare Sanskrit वसन (vasana, dwelling, abiding), Compare also Northern Luri هۏش (höş, house, home).

Related to d(p)ywʾn' (dēwān, archive, collected writings) (from Old Persian *dipi-vahanam), [script needed] (gyʾg /⁠gyāg⁠/, place) (whence Persian جا ()).
