Inherited from Proto-Turkic *alp (“difficult, hard, brave; warrior”). Cognate with Chuvash улӑп (ulăp), Turkish alp (“hero”), Uzbek alp, Kazakh алып (alyp, “giant”), Tatar алып (alıp, “giant”), Yakut алып (alıp, “craftiness, deception, magic”).
