Inherited from Common Turkic *tuman (smoke, fog, mist), equivalent to 𐱃𐰆 (tu-, to enclose) +‎ 𐰢𐰣 (-man). Cognate with Turkish duman, Uzbek tuman, Bashkir томан (toman), Yakut туман (tuman). Compare also Russian тума́н (tumán), a Turkic borrowing.
