Etymology

Perhaps from 𐽰𐽳𐽶𐾁𐽰𐽻𐾅𐽹𐽰𐽷 +‎ -𐽶𐽻𐾅 (*üle- +‎ *-iĺ), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *üle-; or alternatively from a Mongolic source (cf. Middle Mongol ᠤᠯᠤᠰ᠋ (ulus), itself from the same Proto-Turkic root.) Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰆𐰞𐱁 (uluš /⁠ul¹š⁠/) and Karakhanid اُلُشْ (uluš, “village, city”).
