Etymology edit

Usually analyzed as earlier *pe-(H)ai or *poi-(H)ai, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ey- (to give, take) (compare Tocharian B ai- (to give, pay out)) with the Hittite preverb 𒁉𒂊- (pé-e- /pe-/). However, Kloekhorst rejects this and argues for an i-present *h₁p-ói-ei ~ *h₁p-i-énti, from *h₁ep- (to seize) (compare Sanskrit आप् (āp, to reach, obtain)).[1]

Verb edit

𒉺𒀀𒄿 (pāi) (third-person present singular)

  1. to give
  2. to pay
  3. to grant
  4. to hand over

Usage notes edit

Beside syllabograms, the Sumerogram 𒋧 (SUM) was also used.
