    Inherited from Prakrit 𑀯𑀸𑀮𑀅 (vālaa), from Sanskrit पालक (pālaka, protector, keeper), from पाल (pāla) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-). Cognate with​ Hindustani -वाला (-vālā) / والا (vālā).
