Italian edit

Etymology edit

From the Latin verb ending -icāre. By surface analysis, -ic(o) (-ic, adjective-forming derivational suffix) +‎ -are (verbal suffix).

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /iˈka.re/
  • Rhymes: -are
  • Hyphenation: -i‧cà‧re

Suffix edit

-icàre (verb-forming suffix, first-person singular present -ico, first-person singular past historic -icài, past participle -icàto, auxiliary avére)

  1. -ify; used to derive verbs related to a root noun or adjective
    neve (snow) + ‎-icare → ‎nevicare (to snow)
decuplo (tenfold, decuple) + ‎-icare → ‎decuplicare (to tenfold, decuple)

Usage notes edit

  • In stem-stressed forms, the stress is on the antepenultimate vowel (the one preceding the -ic- suffix), e.g. névica "it is snowing", io decùplico "I multiply by ten".
