Etymology

edit

From Proto-Finnic *-në-, probably from Proto-Uralic *-ne. Related to Ingrian -ne-, Karelian -ne-, Votic -ne-, and probably Hungarian -na-, -ne- (conditional mood markers).

Interfix

edit

-ne-

  1. Marker of potential mood in verbs.
    lähtee → lähteneehe/she leaves/goes → he/she will probably leave

Usage notes

edit

Appended to the strong verbal stem. Exact form depends, as the infix may trigger assimilation or be subjected to it depending on the inflection type of the verb. In particular, -l-, -r- and -s- tend to assimilate the -n- (such as tuleetullee), while a stem-final -t- is assimilated into the -n- (such as huomaanhuomannen). With nähdä-type verbs, the final -k- becomes -h- (such as näkeenähnee). The verb olla (to be) is suppletive and has exceptional potential forms with the stem lie(ne)-.
