Etymology

From Old Norse Agðir f pl, from a singular form *Ǫgð, from Proto-Germanic *Agiðō, from the Proto-Indo-European root *h₂eḱ- (“sharp”). Cognate with Old English eg(e)de, Old High German egida, and Old Welsh ocet (> Welsh oged (“harrow”)).
