From French Ayn, recorded earlier as Latin Ainum, presumably from an uncertain Gaulish or Ancient Ligurian etymon, *aginn (height, high place), possibly from pre-Celtic *Agannus (rock), perhaps from the same ultimate origin as the place Aginnum.[1][2]
