editEtymology
editFrom Middle High German Cölne, syncope of Cölene, from Old High German [Term?], from Latin Colōnia (Agrippīna) (“Agrippine Colony”), short for Colōnia Claudia Āra Agrippīnēnsium, the official name of the original Roman settlement. A Middle High German byform was Cölen (with early apocope instead of syncope). To this form corresponds Dutch Keulen, while local Ripuarian Kölle can continue either variant. Doublet of Kolonie.
